San Diego Aircraft Carrier Museum
The main attraction in Embarcadero is the San Diego Aircraft Carrier Museum aboard the USS Midway, the navy's longest-serving aircraft carrier (1945-91). A self-guided audio-tour takes in the berthing spaces, the galley, the sick bay and, of course, the flight deck with its restored aircraft.
Parallel 33
The cuisines of the 33°N latitude, which include Morocco, Lebanon, India, China, Japan, are masterfully fused and fancifully presented at this convivial neighborhood spot. Round off your meal (and start the after party) with a jolt of Turkish coffee. The elephant-headed sculpture in the altar is the Hindu deity Ganesha.
Big Kitchen
The heart and soul of funky South Park, just to the east of Balboa Park at 30th Ave, Big Kitchen welcomes all to its enclave of food, art, music and civic bonhomie (though ardent Bush supporters may get a slightly frosty reception). The omelettes are stupendous, as is the challah French toast, and there's a whole page of breakfast combos named after regulars. It's many locals' vote for best brunch in town.
Café Bassam
No alcohol is served at this European-style, humidor-licensed corner cafe, but you can smoke a cigar while sipping on your espresso or cup of tea (more than 100 varieties). Sit inside and soak in the singular decor, or pose at one of the sidewalk tables instead.
Wine Steals
A convivial neighbourhood place that specialises in fine but inexpensive wines (half a pour for nix, glasses at standard prices or a 'splash' for a quarter), which you can pair with cheese-charcuterie boards.
SeaWorld
Undoubtedly one of San Diego's best known and most popular attractions, SeaWorld opened in Mission Bay in 1964, and Shamu, its resident killer whale, has become an unofficial symbol of the city. SeaWorld is very commercial, very entertaining and slightly educational.
Gaslamp Strip Club
Pull your own bottle from the wine vault, then char your own favorite cut of steak, chicken or fish on the open grills in this retro-Vegas dining room. Fab, creative martinis, 'pin-up' art by Alberto Vargas, and reasonable prices. No one under 21 allowed.
The Vine
For when you need a reprieve from the flip-flops and anklet set. This relative newcomer exudes zero pretension and caters to the beer and wine aficionado with more than 50 bottled Belgians of the former and the same number of wines by the glass. The small plates accompany the liquids perfectly.
Old Town State Historic Park
This park is the site of the original pueblo (village) that sprang up in San Diego below the mission and fortress back in the 18th century. It preserves five of the original adobe (mud brick) buildings alongside scores of recreated structures, including a schoolhouse and a newspaper office.
San Diego Zoo
One of San Diego's biggest attractions, this superb zoo has a worldwide reputation, a colourful history and an enlightened zoo management program. Highlights of the zoo include the Tiger River bioclimatic exhibit, which realistically re-creates an Asian rainforest environment, and Gorilla Tropics, which does the same with an African rainforest.
Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego - La Jolla
The small but excellent Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego - La Jolla supports a permanent post-1950s collection that is especially strong in minimalist, pop and California art.
